UP awards 18 creative writing fellowships

February 26, 2001 | The UP Creative Writing Center (LIKHAAN) awards 18 fellowhsips for the 38th UP National Writers Workshop, to be held at the Hotel Paradiso in Baguio City from March 25 to April 7, 2001. (Check out the website of Workshop #37 held in Iloilo)

Chosen from among around 200 applicants, the 18 Writing Fellows are: Katherine Rose A. Calingasan, Ma. Celeste D. Flores, Gerardo T. Los Baños, and Socorro Mignon A. Villanueva (fiction in English); Mark Anthony R. Cayanan, Vicente Coscolluela, Patricia Ann V. Pangasinan and Yavanna S. Valdellon (poetry in English); Jose Ma. Bayani, Brian James Camaya, Cyril Maaño, and Lorela Mae P. Montes (fiction in Filipino); Jayson P. Jacobo, Elizabeth V. Mapula, Jenny B. Orillos, and Edgar C. Samar (poetry in Filipino); and Allan B. Lopez (one-act play in Filipino) and Gil A. Palma (screenplay in English).

Two slots reserved for writers in Iluko; identities will be announced later.

The theme of this year's workshop is "Ang Bayan at ang Manunulat" (The Country and the Writer). The workshop will be directed by CWC Director Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo. She will be joined by a teaching panel of distinguished writers, all associates, advisers and resident fellows of the CWC: Gemino H. Abad, Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, Jose Y. Dalisay, Jr., J. Neil C. Garcia, Anton M. Juan Jr., Domingo G. Landicho, Bienvenido L. Lumbera, Vim D. Nadera, Charlson L. Ong, Ma. Carla M. Pacis, Jun Cruz Reyes, Lilia Quindoza Santiago, Roland B. Tolentino, Ricado M. de Ungria and Rene O. Villanueva.

This year's National Fellow for Fiction, Erwin Castillo, and National Fellow for Drama, Gina Maria Tagasa, have been invited to deliver their fellowship lectures during the Workshop.

This sumer, National Writers' Workshop is sponsored by UP Diliman Chancellor Emerlinda R. Roman, and held with the UP College of Baguio, whose Dean Priscilla Supnet Macansantos, is herself a former Writing Fellow. The welcome dinner for the Fellows, traditionally held at Mario's Restaurant, will be graced by Mayor Mauricio Domogan, who has been a strong supporter of the Workshop.

Another National Writers' Workshop is held every October in either UP Visayas or UP Mindanao. Since 2000, this second workshop is open only to writers based in either the Visayas or Mindanao. It includes works in Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray and other Visayan languages, as well as English and Filipino.

LIRA to start poetry workshop in August

July 23, 2000 | The Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), a group of young poets writing in Filipino, invites budding writers and students interested to hone their craft in Filipino poetry to join this year's new workshop period starting in August up to February next year.

LIRA takes pride in its poetry clinic first organized in 1985 by multi-awarded poet and critic, Virgilio S. Almario, known in the literary circle as Rio Alma, and currently the executive director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

LIRA's workshops have inspired and set the careers of a number of young writers now among the more respected names in Filipino poetry. They include Oragon poets and prolific authors and editors Roberto T. Anonuevo and Romulo P. Baquiran Jr., performance artist and versatile poet Vim Nadera, Centennial prize-winning playwright and lawyer Nick Pichay, poet and journalist Ariel Dim. Orlongan, poet-teacher and publisher Michael Coroza, and now LIRA's new president, poet and children's story writer, Rebecca T. Anonuevo.

LIRA's workshops are an opportunity for listening to and interacting with the country's most notable poets in Filipino, namely, Teo Antonio, Mike Bigornia, Jesus Manuel Santiago, and Fidel Rillo among others.

To qualify for the workshop interested applicants may submit at least five poems (typed double spaced on regular size bond paper), a brief bionote (including contact number, address, and/or email) and 1 x 1 ID picture to LIRA c/o Adarna House, Sct. National children's book day set

June 7, 2000 | The union of child and book is once again celebrated on July 18, as the 17th National Children's Book Day (NCBD) kicks off with a week of activities for teachers, storytellers, writers, librarians, illustrators, educators, publishers and parents.

From July 15 to 23, The Phililippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) spearheads a series of events including workshops, book launchings, exhibits and a Children's Book Festival. A welcome addition to this year's roster of NCBD activities is the national finals of Salaysayan, the first nationwide storytelling contest.
